“My work explores the tension between inherited structures and the fluidity of the self. I am interested in the moments where identity is not built, but rather dismantled, redacted, or washed away. ‎Through a process of "Abstract Archaeology," I use organic stains—tea, gouache, and ink—to represent the raw, biological essence of memory. These forms are often trapped within or contrasted against "the frame": the decorative, the institutional, and the traditional. In my work, the border acts as a cage of expectation—a "polite" surface that attempts to contain the messy reality of human experience.”

The artist

Sabeen Ahsan is an Abstract artist from Lahore, Pakistan. She visualizes her artworks as anchors within the infinite timeframe of her mind. Her pieces are reveries—spaces where she engages deeply with materials like paint, paper, and gum to capture the natural flow of washes. Driven by the memories and inner turmoil of her soul, she builds each work layer by layer using drying agents to meticulously manifest her visions. Drawing from her background in Miniature Painting at the National College of Arts, she has evolved from working primarily in gouache to incorporating diverse materials. Her practice is a balance of technical precision and the raw, spontaneous energy of a 'spur of the moment' splash. She has exhibited in Pakistan primarily and is a private online arts tutor working with the world renowned company Ministry of Art. She has also been a part of the Vasl residency, Tasweer Ghar residency, House Limited performance art residency in Lahore and Mantiq of the Mantis residency. She has always read and written in her journal and now is dabbling in a bit of writing too.
